The Effectiveness of Financial Literacy Education in Teaching High School Students to Apply Proper Saving and Spending Habits
This study explores and attempts to explain the effectiveness of financial literacy education courses in teaching high school students to apply proper saving and spending habits in their lives. Financial literacy and security poses an essential piece to a successful and happy life, thereby magnifying the importance of financial education. This study administered a survey to high school students enrolled in the Economics and Personal Finance course at a high school in Virginia, United States, before and after one unit of the course. As the researcher hypothesized, the results showed overspending and underspending both before and after the course unit. Also in accordance with the researcher’s hypothesis, the results showed no difference in the saving and spending habits of high school students after the unit. Therefore, based on the results of this study, financial literacy courses fail to teach students to apply financial concepts in their lives. This study provides a case for curriculum reform from one of merely definition to one of application and implementation. Although more research in this field is needed, this study contextualizes the change, or lack thereof, in saving and spending behavior of high school students after instruction from a financial education course, and highlights the importance of financial literacy in students’ lives
