The Effects of E-Commerce on Rural Household Income : Evidence and Mechanism
This paper examines the impacts of a nationwide, government-led e-commerce expansion project on household income. We find that the project has led to increases in rural household income. The positive impacts mainly come from the increase in wage incomes and agricultural operating incomes, and are more prominent for rural households that have lower income levels initially. In particular, the income-increasing effects are probably directly driven by the reduction in information search costs and transportation and logistics costs. In addition, we document that the provision of several complementary interventions for e-commerce, such as promoting the internet-related skills of farmers and the expansion of formal financial credit support are key determinants of the program’s success. Past decades have experienced remarkable developments in e-commerce in many developing countries, and the results of this paper provide insightful policy implications for the design and implementation of government-led e-commerce polices
