The influence of entrepreneurs on rural town development in Botswana
Der Artikel zeichnet den Entwicklungsprozess einer einheimischen Unternehmerschicht in Botswana seit den ersten europäischen Siedlern Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts nach und versucht dabei, einen Zusammenhang zur Entwicklung ländlicher Zentren herzustellen. Während der britischen Kolonialverwaltung waren Botsuaner bis 1949 von Handelsaktivitäten ausgeschlossen, danach beschränkten sich ihre Aktivitäten weitgehend auf den Einzelhandel. Als in den 80er Jahren Studien bewiesen, daß Einheimische gegenüber Asiaten und Europäern bei wirtschaftlichen Aktivitäten benachteiligt waren und die Regierung ein Programm wirtschaftlicher Diversifizierung (in Richtung Arbeitsplatzentwicklung, ländlicher Entwicklung und produzierender Unternehmen) auflegte, änderte sich das Bild. Botsuaner gründeten u.a. mittlere und größere weiterverarbeitende Unternehmen in nahezu allen Wirtschaftsbereichen. (DÜI-Sbd)
