The Politics of Community : Paradigm Challenges
This paper compares and contrasts two paradigms of how the digitalisation of H.E. should proceed in order to demonstrate the political and social challenges involved. It is clear that there are both explicit and tacit discourses within the initiation and development of the project which have informed the outcomes so far. We explore some of the latter discourses and consider what implications for the other projects. One is that of the British government-sponsored, University for Industry (UFI) which has a distributed campus with multiple hubs connecting individual, puchaser-learners to H.E. providers. The UFI paradigm is an old-fashioned one insofar as it is individually-oriented. This is contrasted with a community-oriented paradigm, in which networks of learners build a community of scholars, sharing as well as redefining both explicit and tacit knowledge within a digitised environment. The first is based on an isolating and less empowering conception in an non-sociable, solo-learner transactional model. The other, sociable model is transformational. Its central purpose is to develop, sustain and enhance the relationship between community learning as a catalyst for the changes in that community
