The Role of Chinese Clan Associations for Singapore's Economic Development

Much has been written on the role of state and state-owned enterprises which have been said to contribute to the Republic of Singapore’s economic growth and development. In this paper, however, the authors highlight how the Chinese dialect clan associations, in partnering with the state, helped and contributed to economic development of the city state of Singapore. Among other things, the richness of the social networks run by the Chinese Clan Associations, in fact, multiply, if not support, the efficacy of state intervention by serving as partners in the development process
