The Second Death (or the Second Coming?) of the WEU
The Western European Union (WEU) has received much attention since its rejuvenation in the mid-1980s, in large part due to its integral role as part of the European Union's Common Foreign and Securiy Policy (CFSP). This article argues that the lack of a clearly defined CFSP, contradictions within the Treaty on European Union, the lack of a clearly defined institutional identity "vis-à-vis" other security related organizations, and the lack of military capacity, will make the task of avoiding the 'second death' of the WEU an uphill struggle.
