The Unmet Needs of People with Disability in India : Prevalence, Costs and Opportunities for Government Investments

Persons with disabilities and their households incur significant earnings losses and experience extra costs of maintaining living standards. In India, such additional costs are in the range of 12%-26% of average household monthly consumption expenditure. Persons with disability also have a lower probability of being employed, in the range of 20% (female) to 32% (male). Government expenditures to address the needs of people with disability should be better calibrated to its economic consequences, as identified in this study, to improve their quality of life
