Towards the Sustainability of Sociotechnical Niches in the Dairy Sector : Interacting with the Dominant Regime is Crucial But Risky
The aim of this study was to identify the factors that favor the sustainability of alternative agricultural models using a French case study of a cooperative that produces a Protected Designation of Origin cheese. We used a multi-level perspective framework to better understand the dynamics between calling on internal strengths and interacting with the dominant regime. To this end, we analyzed how the food chain found stability while trying to adapt to three challenges: market fluctuations, the lack of farm transmission, and climate change. Our results showed that interacting with the dominant regime is apparently necessary to face current challenges such as climate change, but that this link may also become a risk if the niche loses its specificity. These findings also question the need for a small food chain to grow, suggest there is a limit that should not be exceeded, and point to the lack of social dimensions in the multi-level perspective framework
