Transient simulation of an aquifer connected to a wetland ecosystem
The “Tablas de Daimiel” National Park originates at the interface of a large fluvial system (Guadiana river) and the discharge area of a big aquifer (Llanura Manchega). The Park has been registered “A class” in the UICN catalogue of marshy zones for being an important bird sanctuary. The existing equilibrium was disrupted by extensive groundwater pumping, land reclamation and drought. A transient unidimensional digital model of a representative stream tube has been set up for studying the management of water resources and the conservation of the marshy zone in the future. Aquifer discharge-pumping strategy relationships have been developed assuming elementary responses are linear and conclusions have been extracted in order to assess the effects of pumpage schedules on the future conservation of the National Park.
