Traps ahead – so don't rush in
Purpose – To encourage organizations to plan well for outsourcing initiatives, and be aware of many obstacles along the way – not least in failing to effectively communicate with employees what the plans are. Design/methodology/approach – From backgrounds including knowledge management, strategic alliances and developing outsourcing initiatives in several countries, the authors combine to share experiences of how to approach outsourcing – and, more importantly, how not to. Findings – Outsourcing has been touted as the ideal way for organizations to reduce costs, focus on core business processes, improve services, enhance skills, reduce time‐to‐market and increase overall competitive advantage. But there are many traps waiting for the unsuspecting organizations. The authors identify ten of those traps, and offer guidance in how to avoid them. Originality/value – Organizations can apply the findings to their own planned outsourcing initiatives.
