Obgleich Vertrauen seit jeher allgegenwärtiges Motiv im literarischen Diskurs über eine effektiv funktionierende Gesellschaft ist, hat die Beachtung von Vertrauen mit der Finanzkrise 2008 deutlich an Dynamik gewonnen. Eine Reihe an Unternehmenskrisen hat beträchtlich zu dieser graduellen Erosion von Vertrauen beigetragen. Die Auffassung, dass dieses Klima Vertrauen schädigt, ist jedoch nicht allzu primitiv. Viel eher ist es so, dass die sozioökonomische Ordnung eine fundamentale Verlagerung von traditionell zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen hin zu Mensch-Maschine-Interaktionen erfährt und so sinkt paradoxerweise das Vertrauen in zentralisierte Institutionen und Organisationen, während neuer Technologie ein Vertrauensvorsprung gewährt wird. Dieser Umbruch fordert Organisationen in zweierlei Hinsicht heraus - zerstörtes öffentliches Vertrauen wiederherstellen, sowie den Erwartungen nachkommen, die durch den Glauben in neue Technologie geschürt werden. Vertrauen ist das Bindeglied, das diese beiden Herausforderungen eint, da Vertrauen sowohl strukturierend als auch mobilisierend sein kann. Strukturierend reorganisiert es das Interaktionsmuster zwischen Akteuren in Krisen; mobilisierend beeinflusst es die Überzeugungen und Intentionen, welche Handlungen zur Technologieübernahme fördern. Bisherige Forschung hat das zweifache Potential des Vertrauenskonzepts kaum verknüpft. Daher zielt die vorliegende Dissertation mit ihren vier empirischen Aufsätzen darauf ab, das Verständnis sowie die Bedeutung von Vertrauen in einem Klima des Umbruchs zu vertiefen. Vertrauen als strukturierender Mechanismus lässt untersuchen, wie Organisationen in Krise versuchen, das Vertrauen ihrer Stakeholder wiederherzustellen. Aufsatz I adressiert diese Fragestellung, indem er vertrauensinspirierende Rhetorik in unternehmerischen Bekanntmachungen untersucht, die der Beeinflussung öffentlicher Wahrnehmungen in Krisenzeiten dienen. Aufsatz II verfolgt die Idee weiter, indem er die Effektivität von Post-Krisen-Reaktionen zur Wiederherstellung des Vertrauens individueller Investoren analysiert. Vertrauen als mobilisierender Mechanismus lässt das Vertrauen von professionellen Investoren in neue Technologien beschreiben. So untersucht Aufsatz III, ob diese Investoren für ihre Entscheidungsfindung künstlicher Intelligenz vertrauen und inwiefern dieses Vertrauen vernünftig kalibriert ist. Aufsatz IV ergründet, in welchem Masse professionelle Investoren glauben, dass die Distributed Ledger-Technologie Blockchain vertrauenswürdig ist, sie beabsichtigen dieser zu vertrauen und ihr tatsächlich vertrauen. Indem sich diese Dissertation Vertrauen von den zwei Mechanismen, strukturierend und mobilisierend, nähert, hebt sie dessen Multiplexität und vielschichtige Auswirkungen, sowie dessen fragiles, aber auch beeinflussendes Wesen hervor. Mit ihren empirischen Erkenntnissen und Schlussfolgerungen gibt die Dissertation Impulse, wie mittels der strategischen Ressource Vertrauen in einem Klima des Umbruchs im digitalen Zeitalter strukturiert und mobilisiert werden kann. Obgleich die Dissertation nicht behauptet, dass Vertrauen ein Allheilmittel ist, stellt sie Vertrauen als Währung vor, mit der im Umbruch gezahlt wird.
