Tryst with the Victim of Crime : (Sexual Harassment of Women in the Work Place.) Diagnosis& Prognosis

Society has a strategic attitude towards the victim. There seems to be a marked reluctance and resistance to accept the innocence or accidental nature of victim behavior. Such reluctance is shown by the community responses, police behavior, family reactions and surprisingly by the victim themselves. From the standpoint of the observer, the problem that is envisaged in giving status of a victim to the individual are the social cues and the signs which are typically vague and ambiguous. This has led to the development of conventions which stereotype ideas and beliefs about the instances which victimize the person On these lines victims are categorized as casual victims, habitual victims, accidental victims, serious victims and accordingly a victim status is given to him. The process of ascribing victim status is complex and often the line of discrimination also becomes arbitrary.The present paper insists that irrespective of the level of sexual harassment in the work place an individual mainly the woman does undergo pains and traumas. Much depends on her socio-economic background and the contributions of other demographic variables which determine her victimization. Sexual harassment have detrimental effects on women workers who resist to join the male dominated fields. Government and the society must show concern and redress the grievances of such victims .Laws should be made stringent and the delivery of justice should be fair and speedy. Keeping women away from the work force will definitely hamper the message of gender equality
