Understanting productivity
In 1975 when the Government embarked on its study of the economy of manufacturing industry, it hoped for new investment proposals and for a high wage/high productivity approach to the future of the economy. In reviewing progress in July 1976, they accepted that the need was not only to encourage new investment, but also to make better use of existing equipment: productivity was thought to be more important than new investment.
