Universal or Selective Welfare : Free Meals and Violence in Korean Schools

Since 2011, Korean students above the poverty line have been eligible for free school meals. The authors of this paper hypothesize that increased homogeneity of eligibility reduces peer conflicts and school violence. Data from 5,853 schools in Korea reveal that shifting from selective to universal free meal schemes has significantly decreased violence in middle and high schools
