UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES AND The INFORMATION NEEDS OF The RESEARCHER 2: A CONSUMER'S VIEW
A library is, or should be, a service centre specializing in the location, storage, acquisition and exposure of information. From the consumer's point of view the emphasis in such a definition is on the words ‘service’ and ‘exposure’. Most libraries score reasonably well from the viewpoint of service. To be sure, it is not impossible to find librarians who are shocked at the thought of a book being removed from their well‐organized store and are further devastated when the errant user who has committed that crime compounds the felony by failing to return the item promptly. However, most users would admit that they receive much better service from libraries than they do from many other types of service centres.
