Credit supplied by the banking sector is the most important funding source for firms and households in Latin America and the Caribbean. Unfortunately, credit is scarce, costly and volatile. Without deep and stable credit markets, the region will be hard pressed to achieve high and sustainable growth rates and combat poverty. Given the importance of banking to growth and prosperity, the Inter-American Development Bank has made this sector the focus of its 2005 Report on Economic and Social Progress in Latin America. The Report analyzes the three main characteristics of bank credit--scarcity, expense and volatility--and makes policy recommendations.Abstract: El crédito suministrado por el sector bancario es la fuente de financiamiento más importante para las firmas y los hogares en América Latina y el Caribe. Desafortunadamente, el crédito es escaso, costoso y volátil. Al no contar con mercados de créditos sólidos y estables, le quedará muy difícil a la región alcanzar tasas de crecimiento altas y sostenibles, y lograr combatir la pobreza. Dada la importancia del sector bancario para el crecimiento y la prosperidad de América Latina, este año el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo ha dedicado el Informe de Progreso Económico y Social (IPES 2005), a este tema. El informe analiza las tres características principales del crédito bancario: escasez, gasto y volatilidad, y hace recomendaciones al respecto.
