USA: Konservative unter Anpassungsdruck. Die republikanische Partei vor den Wahlen 2012
Trotz ihrer guten Wahlchancen geben die Republikaner im Wahljahr 2012 das Bild einer mitunter orientierungslosen Partei ab. Mitt Romneys Favoritenstatus als Präsidentschaftskandidat der Grand Old Party war weniger unangefochten, als viele gedacht hatten; der Vorwahlkampf spiegelte die Gespaltenheit der Partei wider. Die Republikaner sind hin- und hergerissen zwischen den Forderungen ihrer sozialkonservativen Wählerinnen und -wähler, dem Einfluss der fiskalkonservativen »Tea Party«-Bewegung und deren Vertreter/innen im Kongress und dem Pragmatismus des Parteiestablishments. Dabei ist gerade jetzt eine Richtungsentscheidung dringend notwendig - denn die Partei muss auf den demografischen und gesellschaftlichen Wandel in den USA reagieren. Wenn es ihr nicht gelingt, ihre Anteile unter den »Latino«-Wählerinnen und -Wählern deutlich zu steigern und ihre Agenda anzupassen, wird die Partei mittelfristig an Stärke einbüßen. Schon jetzt ist der Anpassungsdruck so groß, dass die Partei bei den Wahlen im November Einbußen erleiden könnte, sollte sie es nicht schaffen, neue Wählergruppen für sich zu gewinnen
