Validation of the Latvian and Russian Version of the Questionnaire 'Interpersonal Communication Assessment Scale'
This scientific paper is a result of research, in which the Latvian and Russian versions of the questionnaire “Interpersonal Communication Assessment Scale” (ICAS) by Marilyn D. Klakovich and Felicitas A. Dela Cruz, were validated, studied and their psychometric properties were analyzed. Interpersonal communication is an important and integral part of the health sector that contributes to the day-to-day routine and improves patient satisfaction with both short- and long-term care. While the patient is in a healthcare institution, they communicate several times with various healthcare representatives - doctors, nurses, and medical assistants, therefore it is very important to evaluate and understand the quality of this communication in each medical institution. The Latvian and Russian versions of the ICAS have been adopted to assess physician-patient communication. ICAS validation was carried out in several stages: translation from the original language into Latvian and Russian, back-translation into the original language, comparison of the results of the original version with the Latvian and Russian versions, proof of the validity of the Latvian and Russian language questionnaires. Analysis of psychometric parameters and proof of validity was performed using SPSS version 26 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). The study involved 50 Latvian-speaking and 50 Russian-speaking participants (non-probabilistic convenience sample). Psychometric analysis has shown high values in Cronbach's Alpha (ICAS: .94/.96*, advocacy: .91/.93*, therapeutic use of self: .88/.92*, validation: .65/.85 *) (*LV/RUS), Pearson correlation (r = .971, P = .000), Barlett's test of sphericity (χ2 = 1253.22, P = .000), Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure of sampling adequacy (.775), Interclass Correlation Coefficient (.916, P = .000). The general psychometric indicators for the Latvian and Russian versions of ICAS are comparable and close to the original ICAS version results. ICAS has proven high internal consistency/reliability and temporal stability in Latvian and Russian versions, so it is considered a suitable and reliable tool for assessing interpersonal communication
