Voluntary Sustainability Standards

This article begins by explaining private standards in an international context. On one hand, standards have an important role in shaping social environmental sustainability and therefore promoting economic, political, cultural and geographical development. On the other hand, their uncoordinated proliferation can generate misleading signals and measurements, compromising their ability to fulfill their role. The non-governmental nature of these regulations poses challenges to uniform standardization across the global value chain. In face of this problem, some countries have launched national platforms to establish minimal criteria on which the standard can be created. This study argues that this kind of meta-regulation is necessary
