Wealth and Happiness : Empirical Evidence from Afghanistan
The economics of happiness is an attractive and interesting way to provide broader concept of wealth. It is able to provide understanding on relative utility that does not just depend as intervene by individual choices within monetary budget constraint but also non-monetary factors. Therefore, this paper examines the determinants of happiness in Afghanistan and assesses the relationship between individual wealth and happiness. Data used for this study comes from primary data source by distributing 450 questionnaires to respondents in three provinces of Afghanistan, and logistic regression model has been applied to analyze the data to identify the relationship between happiness and wealth from both monetary and non-monetary variables. Based on the analysis, the variables such as age, education, health, asset, expenditure, marital status and sex are indicated as sources of happiness for Afghans whereas gender and marriage have negative impact on Afghans’ happiness. It is recommended to Afghanistan government to implement effective policies in education and health improvement so as to increase people’s happiness
