Welfare Assessment of New Retail Formats: Evidence from Japan's Retail Industry
This study attempts to measure the welfare gain caused by new retailer entries. In Japan, following the deregulation of entry restriction on large-scale retail stores, specialty supermarket stores, and convenience stores expanded their market share. We estimate the consumer benefit by incorporating the differences in service quality as well as differences in price among retail formats and demonstrate that welfare improvements are primarily explained by changes in service quality, and that the effects of the deregulation are in fact limited.
