'Weltoffenheit Schafft Jobs' : Turkish Entrepreneurship and Multiculturalism in Berlin
The concept 'weltoffenheit schafft jobs' ('world-openness creates jobs') demonstrates the new relationship between Germans and non-Germans, and the growing importance of multiculturalism in Germany. Violence and xenophobia in some parts of Germany motivate the promotion of tolerance and 'openness' toward non-Germans, indicating a rethinking of the place of immigrants in Germany. The connections among multiculturalism, unemployment, and self-employment in the case of Berlin's Turkish economy are examined. Five recent trends that are currently reshaping the "Turkish economy," and changing the face of Turkish entrepreneurship in Germany, are described: (1) heterogeneity, (2) hybridity, (3) professionalism, (4) internationalization, and (5) state interest. The consequences of these trends are partly contradictory. On the one hand, they challenge the relevance of the concept of "Turkish economy;" on the other hand, they give the concept of "Turkish economy" an unprecedented respectability, popularizing it.This contradiction should be analyzed as an outcome of the growing importance of multiculturalism in Germany's relation to immigrants. Acknowledging the presence of immigrants has led to an emphasis of their high rate of self-employment, considered a solution to the immigrants' unemployment and integration problems. The economic dimension of multiculturalism is also considered, suggesting that immigration and ethnic pluralism can be economically positive. It is recommended that non-native Germans' participation in German society be not only economic, but also political, social, and cultural. (CBS)
