What Are the Motivations of Arab University Students in Learning English in the US and UK? Why Do They Have These Motivations
For a long time, the United States and the United Kingdom have experienced an influx of international students from the Arab nations. Since English is the main language spoken in these two countries, students from Arab countries have to learn the language for easy communication. This task is even more significant given that learning in most Arab nations is conducted in Arabic. Meanwhile, there are few institutions that teach in English. In Arab nations, English is not mandatory; it is taught as a foreign language. It is not in the school syllabus; therefore, people who do not choose the language as an extra will find themselves in a difficult situation when they decide to come to the UK or the US. The main goal of this study is to explain how Arab students get motivated to learn English and research reasons why they develop this motivation. This research design was used with the view to providing adequate answers to the research question. Therefore, the research findings clearly indicated that both extrinsic and intrinsic factors influence the motivation of Arab university students to study English in the UK and the US. These intrinsic reasons include the challenge, fantasy, control, and curiosity. In turn, such extrinsic reasons were identified: the need for better grades, peer pressure, and employment opportunities. Therefore, this study recommends the following. First, these students are suggested to develop a holistic approach to the learning process that should include learning in other languages. They should understand that another reason for learning English is its help in the learning of foreign culture, thus creating awareness. According to the final recommendation, Middle East countries need to embrace the importance of English and strive to include it in the curriculum
