What Can We Learn from the History of Corporate R&D to Understand Current Innovation Management Challenges?
A number of recent articles have examined trends and practices related to the challenges of innovation management. A common finding among these studies is that few firms' innovation and new product development strategies rely solely on internal R&D. Rather, many firms have been experimenting with acquiring R&D from various external sources via licensing, contracts, alliances and joint ventures. This emerging trend represents a return to the norms of the early 20th century. Thus, the focus of this paper is on understanding the similarities and differences between R&D sourcing in the early 20th and the early 21st centuries, and how these lessons can inform current innovation management practice. We begin with a review of the early history of corporate R&D, exploring the conditions that made it favorable to establish corporate R&D laboratories. We then discuss the "Big Science" era, followed by an examination of the current period and the environmental factors influencing firms to search externally for sources of innovation. Finally, we compare and contrast the formative and current periods, and draw implications to help managers deal with today's innovation management challenges associated with accessing external R&D and integrating it with internal R&D
