What, Where, Who and How a Quadruple Perspective and a Research Agenda for the New Space Economy in the 21st Century : Focus on the “What”
The Space Economy is a growing phenomenon at worldwide level, with an economic impact of hundreds of Billions of USD. Despite its notable importance under the technological, social, economic, and political aspects, it is still difficult to characterize the Space Economy. This paper has the objective to clarify the main four elements: branches of the Space Economy, other than the general Upstream and Downstream classification ( What ); actors of the Space Economy’s ecosystem ( Who ); different ecosystems, in particular different relationship between Public and Private entities operating within the Space Sector, the geographical distribution and the Space Regulations ( Where and How ).The main focus is the exhaustive mapping of the industries, in terms of products or services ( What ), related to the Space Economy phenomenon. We mainly refer to three branches to characterize the Space Economy: the manufacturing, the service and the commercial branches. The manufacturing branch includes all those companies and agencies developing Space Technologies. The service branch includes all those companies and agencies using the satellites data to develop applications in support of specific sectors and services on Earth. The commercial branch includes the development of applications tested in space and then used on Earth.Under the Who perspective, the main actors playing in the Space Economy’s ecosystem and their coopetition-based relationships are found. As far as the Where and How perspective is considered, an important point is to understand the differences between the Public-Private ecosystems around the world: for example, the United States and Europe are more open to the parallel development of the two Ps, while in other Countries like India, still the public agency is driving the full national Space Sector. Moreover the need for regulations became very clear and at international level new local regulations, as well as International Space Policy is in continuous development. This paper will provide an initial mapping of all the components of the “What”, “Where”, “Who” and “How”. Then it focuses on the “What” aspect, detailing its characterization
