Why Income Redistribution? A Conjoint Analysis in Japan
The political economy of income redistribution has produced explanations as to why some citizens prefer more income redistribution than others in democracies. Material self-interest in varying forms (e.g., Romer 1975; Meltzer and Richard 1981; Iversen and Soskice 2001; Benabou and Ok 2011), parochial altruism (e.g., Shayo 2009; Rueda and Stegmueller 2019), and concerns over negative externality of income inequality (e.g., Alesina and Giuliano 2011; Rueda and Stegmueller 2019) are, among many others, deemed as reasons for citizens’ preference of income redistribution. The literature indicates that income redistribution can be multidimensional. What is yet to be done is to conduct empirical analyses that address this multidimensionality of income redistribution. When voters provide support for certain redistribution policies, they choose a package of policy that has different attributes in different dimensions (e.g., a policy is increasing budget deficit and income inequality while improving education quality and crime rate). To better address this point, we conduct a conjoint analysis in which respondents show their preference for hypothetical government policy while researchers can directly observe which dimension those respondents support for (or oppose to) (Hainmueller, Hopkins, Yamamoto. 2013; Horiuchi, Smith, and Yamamoto 2018). A conjoint analysis was conducted online with a sample of Japanese voters in January 2022, and we report the results
