Women and Girls in Water and Sanitation : A Social and Legal Perspective

The efforts to ensure access to water and sanitation have been ongoing for a few decades by the international community. Despite that, numerous communities around the globe still lack such basic access, in particular in developing and least developing countries (LDCs). Women and girls are especially affected by those conditions. This chapter will review the implications that the lack of access to water and sanitation poses to women and answer the following question: Are there effec- tive instruments that can be used to tackle the lack of access to water and sanitation for women and girls? The authors will highlight the need for effective domestic regulations to ensure the access of women and girls to water and sanitation where the recommendations of the global instruments adopted for this purpose can be incorporated within the domestic legislations
