Working Women Informal Sector of Coastal Area during COVID Pandemic - Case Study of Vypin Island (Kerala)
Vypin is one of the groups of islands that form part of the city of Kochi, in Kerala state of Ernakulam district with around 27 kilometres Length. This island was formed in 1341 followed by heavy flood and now it is one of the famous tourist places in the state. Edavanakkad, Elamkunnappuzha, kuzhuppilly, Nayarambalam, Njarakkal, Puthuvyp and Pallippuram are panchayaths Vypin and all the panchayaths are having a part in them which connected to see. The people in Vypin island are having diverse job opportunities after the construction of the Gosree bridge but there are still people working within the island. When considering only those people, most people will be working on fish, fish products, sea products, and jobs related to the tourism sector. The pandemic made all the working-class people in a difficult time especially those women who are working both inside and outside the house were economically and mentally very much struggled they Have to face extra burden during this pandemic. By direct observation and conversation with women working in the diverse area, they are mentioned their economic and mental pressure during the lockdown, and many people are forceful couldn't completely follow COVID-19 protocol like without wearing a mask they have to work sometimes and without proper sanitation, they have to work. The women labourers are forcefully carried extra burden during this pandemic. This study may help find the diverse problems faced by coastal women with very limited income sources and job opportunities. And this study could be used for any policymaking for the improvement of working women in the Coastal area
