Der Welthandel hat im Jahr 2011 spürbar an Dynamik eingebüßt und expandiert seitdem mit recht niedrigen Raten. Zwar ging diese Entwicklung mit einer sich weltweit verlangsamenden Konjunktur einher. Allerdings entwickelte sich der Welthandel noch schwächer als es gemäß historischer Erfahrungen bei einem solchen Anstieg des weltweiten Bruttoinlandsprodukts zu erwarten gewesen wäre. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellt sich die Frage, ob sich der Zusammenhang zwischen Welthandel und Weltproduktion dauerhaft geändert hat oder ob es sich um ein vorübergehendes Phänomen handelt.
