Biokraftstoffe - Option für die Zukunft? Ziele, Konzepte, Erfahrungen
Um die deutschen Verpflichtungen im Rahmen des Burden Sharings der Europäischen Union (EU) oder noch anspruchsvollere Klimaschutzziele zu erreichen, sind besondere Anstrengungen notwendig. Zwar ist der Ausstoß von Kohlendioxid (CO2) des Straßenverkehrs in Deutschland seit 1999 um etwa 6 Prozent zurückgegangen. Aufgrund des Anstieges in den 1990er Jahren und der weiterhin hohen Mobilitätsnachfrage sind die verkehrsbedingten CO2-Emissionen aber noch deutlich über dem Niveau von 1990. Damit der Verkehr künftig einen größeren Beitrag zum deutschen Klimaschutzziel leisten kann, müssen alle Optionen in Betracht gezogen werden. Einen wichtigen Beitrag könnten hier Biokraftstoffe leisten. Zur Optimierung des Klimaschutzbeitrages von Biokraftstoffen ist es unabdingbar, die Emissionen über den gesamten Prozess - von der Herstellung bis zur Verbrennung - zu betrachten. Neuere Untersuchungen zeigen, dass in einer solchen Öko-Gesamtbilanz erhebliche Unterschiede zwischen verschiedenen Biokraftstoffen bestehen. Während das Einsparpotential bei konventionellen Biokraftstoffen eher gering ist, haben Biokraftstoffe der zweiten Generation CO2-Vorteile bis zu 90 Prozent. Auch international gibt es große Unterschiede in der Effizienz, mit der Biokraftstoffe produziert werden.
