Enfants trouvés, reconnus, légitimés, Les statistiques de la filiation en France, aux XIXe et XXe siècles
Maksud Monique and Nizard Alfred. Foundlings and children acknowledged and legitimated Statistics on filiation in France in the 19th and 20th centuries. During the first half of the 19th century, about 40 % of illegitimate children were abandoned. This figure then dropped and continued to decline considerably : 18 % in about 1910, 13 % in about 1925 and 4 % in the fifties. Around 1850, the infant mortality of illegitimate children was nearly twice that of the legitimate : it is currently 60 % higher. Out of every 100 illegitimate children the number acknowledged at birth by their father was 12 in about round 1860, 17 in 1890 and 23 in 1971. Under the new law, this figure went up to 27 in 1972 and 34 in 1973. In the 1960s seven out of ten children were ultimately acknowledged by their father (at birth or afterwards). The 1972 law will cause this proportion to increase. The number of legitimated children is somewhat lower than the number of children ultimately acknowledged by their father : 33 % around 1860 as against 40, 45 % around 1890 as against 50 to 60 % and 55 % in the 1960s as against 70%.
