La mortalité départementale en France 7
SUMMARY. Mortality in France varies throughout the country. The departements in which expectation of life is low are concentrated in the north and centered around three regions with high mortality : Brittany, the Nord and Alsace. In the south, mortality is particularly low in Poitou- Charentes, Languedoc-Roussillon and the south eastern part of the Alps. Between 1961-63 and 1967-69 expectation of life increased slowly in the country as a whole, but the differences between départements remained relatively constant, and high-mortality areas did not make gains, relatively to those with low mortality. In Brittany the main causes of excess mortality are alcoholism, cirrhosis of the liver and deaths from violence; alcoholism is also an important cause of death in the North and the East, though the major cause of excess mortality in these areas is diseases of the respiratory system. If the social status distribution of the population were standardized throughout the country, the high-mortality areas would maintain their excess, but the Paris region and the region of Rhône-Alpes, both highly urbanized and industrialized would also be included among areas of high mortality. Variations in medical services do not seem to be linked with variations in mortality.
