Integrating Patterns of Ethnic Conflict Management : A Group-Oriented Approach
The academic study and the practice of conflict resolution make use of a wide variety of paradigms. Ideally, the presence of competing concepts and theories should be taken as a sign of rude health in academia. In the field of ethnic conflict studies, however, the competition of paradigms has so far not proved to be as constructive as one would hope to see, and many lines of research have been conducted as if hermetically sealed against challenges from other lines of inquiry. In particular, multiculturalist ideas from political theory have still not found entry into political science accounts. This paper will argue that this is because mainstream political science is dominated by a traditional liberal ontology, and further, it is trapped by an excessive focus on the presence or absence of rationality in ethnic behaviour. Moving away from this focus and reassessing the role of the group opens up the way to overcome the stark divisions in political science accounts, and to integrate the best insights from these diverse analyses. The present paper aims to identify the foundations which would support the progress of such research
