La démographie des auteurs
Vessillier Michèle. The Population of Authors. The population of French authors was analysed on the basis of a questionnaire sent to almost 3,000 professional writers and of 1 500 biographical cards dealing with well known French personalities. 90 % were men, the proportion was even higher among the most successful professional writers. The population is an old one; it takes longer for authors to become professionally known than for members of other professions, even including journalists : on the other hand, professional renown lasts well beyond the theoretical age at retirement. Economically speaking, a writer's career starts late and is very short, royalty income is limited to a period of about 15 years (on average between ages 40 and 54). The incidence of marriage is lower among authors than in the general population; the incidence of divorce among married authors, on the other hand, is higher. Family size is small, one or two-child families are frequent, and large families are rare. 80 % live in the Paris area, and the capital attracts migrants from abroad and the provinces.
