La démographie des créateurs
Vessillier Michèle. ? Demography in the creative arts. A questionnaire sent out in 1987 to 3 000 professional writers and artists, registered as such under the French Social Security system, with an annual income of more than 1 12 000 francs (the minimum required for eligibility for benefits under the writers and artists "health scheme"), was extremely successful and achieved a response rate in excess of 50 per cent. The results, supplemented by some other data for France and other countries, when compared to figures for the population as a whole shed new light on the structure of this group. The number of men in these professions greatly exceeds that of women and this disproportion is even greater for the minority of successful professionals. Careers usually begin later in life, although professional activity and fame continue well beyond the hypothetical retirement age; social behaviour related to the family generally deviates from the norm : there are fewer marriages, fewer children, more divorces and a greater number of unmarried couples; there is definite concentration of births and residence in a single central location : Paris and its suburbs attract writers and artists, and empty the provinces. It would be possible to establish sub-groups, whose behaviour would be differentiated without attempting to set up stereotypes. It is useful to distinguish between the traditional professions in the creative arts and the newcomers : authors and playwrights, painters and sculptors on one hand, correspond more often to this type of profile than do photographers or designers.
