La surmortalité féminine en Europe avant 1940
Tabutin Dominique. The Excess Mortality of Women in Europe before 1940. In the past female excess mortality was recorded especially during the reproductive ages. An analysis of data for four European countries (Sweden, France, England and Wales and Belgium), shows that this female excess mortality became more marked during the 19th century, chiefly at the adolescent ages. It was only around 1939 that it completely disappeared from France. A study of the development of mortality causes by sex in England-Wales shows that infectious diseases continued to be prevalent among women for a long time. The gradual disappearance of female mortality was caused partly by the diminution in this type of disease and partly by the increase in violent and accidental deaths, which are a feature of male mortality. The existence and growth of this female excess mortality at certain ages must be linked to the more general problem of the condition of women in the 19th century which, in the almost unanimous opinion of the experts, was particularly disadvantageous during this period.
