Migration and Sustainable Development in the Arctic
The Arctic is sparsely populated and many rural areas of the Arctic suffer from a demographic decline. On the other hand has the Arctic long attracted outside interest and in recent years the countries of the European High North have become important migrant destinations. Simultaneously, many local communities in the Arctic suffer from limited income opportunities. In particular the extractive industries prove challenging for Arctic communities because their environmental impact has negative effects on traditional livelihoods. This chapter looks at how migrants can be integrated into small Arctic communities and which role migration can play for the sustainable development of the Arctic region, looking beyond short-term solutions
