Poverty in the USSR
Until recently, the poverty problem in the USSR was closed to broad discussion. The term "low income" [>i>maloobespechennost'>/i>] replaced "poverty" [>i>bednost'>/i>] âthe term that is generally accepted throughout the world. This made it possible not to focus attention on the social content of this phenomenon under the conditions of "socialist society." There have been virtually no works of a sociological nature devoted to the study of the socioeconomic status of the poor strata of the population, their way of life, mental stereotypes and stereotypes of value orientations, and the attitudes of other social groups toward them that would provide the key to understanding the nature of this phenomenon in our society.
