The Effect of Social Support on Suicidal Ideation In Children of Cross-Border Marriage Couples

Female marriage-related migration from less-developed nations to high-income ones is rapidly rising in Asia. Using a unique dataset based on the South Korean Youth Risk Behavior Survey, we examine the effects of social support on reducing suicidal ideation in the children with foreign-born mothers. We find that the advice of mothers (teachers) is 3.2% (5.1%) points more effective in reducing suicidal ideation in these children than in those with native Korean mothers. These imply that more government attention should be focused on efforts to educate and train foreign-born mothers and school teachers to improve their capacity to advise these children
