The Internationalization Performance : The Roll of Intangible Resources and Regulatory Capabilities in the Born-Global and Uppsala Models

As part of a research project about the patterns of internationalization of Mexican SMEs, the aim of this paper is to analyse the internationalization strategies followed by enterprises in the world, distinguishing between big enterprises and the rest (SMEs). In particular, we want to deep in the determinants of the internationalization and the processes that allow companies to perform in international markets according to their resources. For it, we developed an analytical frame based on the resources-based view of the firm and on two internationalization models, the Uppsala and the Born-Global, with the purpose of allowing the analysis of different typologies of internationalized firms. By the use of Tobit regression models, the empirical results show that the intangible resources are more important for the Born-Global than for the Uppsala firms to establish the internationalization strategy, and also the regulatory capabilities play an important role in the internationalization strategy for both Born-Global and Uppsala models
