The Success of Poverty Alleviation Programmes in India : A Case Study of Thane District

India is the second-largest populated country in the World after China. The total population of India crossed one billion at the beginning of the twenty-first century. There are various socio-economic problems faced by a country like India and one of them is poverty. According to the official government estimates, about a quarter of the country’s total population remains below the poverty line at present. More than 300 million people in India are officially poor. The population of India by Census Commission’s report on 1st March 2011 was 1,21,01,93,422. As compared to the other developing nations the measures taken to eradicate poverty always failed to bring the people from BPL (Below Poverty Line) to APL (Above Poverty Line). After long 60 years of independence, India is still called a poor nation. Poverty is one of the evils behind backwardness in India. The present study is all about poverty. Maharashtra is one of the progressive states in India, whereas Thane is the largest District in India. In the present study, 1004 families have been selected for the study, and on the basis of replies given by them by using statistical tools like the Chi-square method the analysis has been made. Various remedies are suggested on how to uplift the BPL families in Thane District to Above Poverty Line
