THE UNCHANGING SYMBOL OF NATIONALISM IN TURKEY: 10th ANNUAL MARCH

National anthems are important tools that undertake a profound mission in the foundation and continuation of national consciousness. Despite the fact that there are many well known marches in Turkey, the Tenth Year March seems to be the only national march other than the Turkish National Anthem (İstiklal Marşı) that touches the national sentiment the most and owned by the majority. The Tenth Year March has been sung by huge masses in Turkey with great enthusiasm as in the early years of its composition which took place decades ago. One of the reasons for its being so popular might be the revival of national consciousness as Turkey has gone through a troublesome political phase while another reason might be hidden in its musical qualities. As a musical work, thanks to its musical simplicity and its ease of being performed by the masses it has become extensively popular.
