Construites historiquement dans un cadre conflictuel, les relations d'échange entre les grands distributeurs et leurs fournisseurs semblent avoir amorcé une inflexion depuis le milieu des années 1990 : d'un état transactionnel et statique, elles se métamorphosent pour prendre un caractère relationnel et dynamique. Depuis une dizaine d'années, de nombreuses recherches empiriques, notamment en marketing sont venues compléter ou préciser les antécédents des normes relationnelles dans les relations dyadiques. Elles permettent ainsi de mieux comprendre les déterminants de l'engagement (Morgan & Hunt, 1994), de l'orientation à long terme d'une relation (Ganesan, 1994), de la dépendance (Lusch & Brown, 1996) ou encore de la confiance (Doney & Cannon, 1997) qui apparaît comme une variable incontournable de l'équation relationnelle tant par ses aspects institutionnels (Granovetter, 1985 ; Uzzi, 1997) qu'interpersonnels (McAllister, 1995 ; Mayer et al., 1995). S'inscrivant dans cette perspective, notre recherche a pour vocation de cerner les contours de la relation d'échange entre la grande distribution et ses fournisseurs. Cette volonté nous conduit à saisir d'un point de vue commercial, marketing ou logistique les différents éléments sur lesquels l'échange se construit mais également et principalement à déterminer l'ampleur de la dimension relationnelle de l'échange tant au niveau organisationnel qu'interpersonnel. Afin d'y parvenir, notre cadre théorique s'articule autour des concepts fondamentaux qui structurent la littérature de recherche liée aux relations dyadiques. La théorie du pouvoir et de la dépendance, l'échange relationnel et les travaux portant sur le thème de la confiance sont donc abordés. Notre méthodologie, qualitative, comprend 70 entretiens effectués d'une part avec un grand distributeur français, d'autre part avec ses fournisseurs « alimentaires » (produits alimentaires et ménagers). Nous avons choisi d'interroger les acteurs en relation directe dans les fonctions commerciales et marketing. Au total, 30 entretiens ont été réalisés chez le distributeur, les commerciaux et les hommes du marketing étant représentés de manière équivalente. Nos résultats laissent apparaître quatre types de relation d'échange distributeur – fournisseurs : – Le premier type est constitué par l'échange existant avec les entreprises multinationales (Danone, L'Oréal, Kraft, …). Ces firmes élaborent des produits industriels sophistiqués peu soumis à des aléas de production. – Le deuxième correspond aux échanges réalisés avec les entreprises fabriquant des produits frais soumis à de fortes incertitudes de production (produits carnés, laitiers, ou fruits et légumes) – Le troisième type d'échange est réalisé avec des entreprises de taille nationale fabriquant des produits industriels standardisés. – Enfin, le quatrième type de relation d'échange concerne non une catégorie particulière de fournisseurs comme les précédents mais le lieu où ils sont réalisés à savoir le niveau local (en hypermarché) et non le niveau de la centrale d'achat. Enfin, dans une dernière partie, nous montrons que ces différents types d'échange ne peuvent pas tous être rapprochés des formes transactionnelles et relationnelles. Deux des quatre types de relation d'échange se différencient sensiblement de l'échange transactionnel et de l'échange relationnel dans leur acceptation pure. Afin de prendre en compte les quatre types d'échange identifiés, nous proposons les notions d'échange substantiel lorsque toute la relation n'est focalisée que sur les résultats (entreprises multinationales et nationales) et la notion d'échange procédural lorsque les procédures de la relation sont perçues comme importantes (entreprises de produits agricoles et niveau local).
